## Questions

<!-- pulse:slot services.parquet-herringbone-flooring.faq -->
### What is the difference between herringbone and chevron?

Both are zigzag patterns made from short blocks. In herringbone the blocks are cut square and meet at right angles, so each row is staggered. In chevron the block ends are cut at an angle, so they meet in a clean point down the room. Herringbone feels classic; chevron feels more formal.

### Why does layout planning matter so much?

A pattern floor shows every mistake. If the first rows are off line, the zigzag drifts and the cuts at the walls end up uneven. We plan the layout from the room's centre line and check the subfloor is level before laying, so the pattern runs straight and looks balanced from the door.

### Can herringbone go over underfloor heating?

Yes, when the blocks are suitable for it. Engineered herringbone and herringbone LVT are the usual choices over heating because they are more stable than solid blocks. Tell us about your system and we will match the product to it.

### Can I get the herringbone look in vinyl?

Yes. Herringbone LVT gives the same pattern in a waterproof, hard-wearing floor, which suits kitchens, busy halls and homes with pets. You can see herringbone floors we have fitted on our projects page, and ask us to show you LVT samples.

### Is herringbone more expensive than a plank floor?

Usually, yes. The blocks cost more per square metre and laying the pattern takes more time. Your free quote will show the difference for your room.

### Can you restore an old parquet floor?

Often. Old parquet can be lifted and relaid where loose, gap filled, sanded and refinished. See our floor sanding page.

### Which rooms suit herringbone best?

Hallways and living rooms, where the pattern leads the eye through the space. It also works well in kitchens when laid in LVT.
